SHI Rui used to think AIDS was frightening. But now he's not even afraid to hug an AIDS patient.HE konws a lot more about the disease.
Shi's sophomore at Nanyang Normal College in Henan Province. He and 32 his schoolmates decided to go visit some children with AIDS. whose parents had died of AIDS,in Nanyang this month.
"These children are intelligent. They shoule be cared for and loved." she said.
University students are learning more about the disease and are trying to lend a hand since universities have been trying to"inform"the public in recent years.
At Nanyang Normal college,Maria Linnemann,a British professor,is lecturing on AIDS."I've been doing AIDS sducation since 2001 at my school. I an glad to see that students are better-informed about it to others now."
Other schools like Cuangxi Medical University have AIDS in forming organizations. They help increase local awareness of AIDS by handing out booklets and performing for AIDS patients.Fudan University also holds information activities on Dceember 1,World AIDS Day.
I'm not out begging for myself
WANG Chongrun calls himself a beggar, but says he doesn¡¯t feel ashamed.
Wang raises money not for him-self, but for orphans whose parents died of AISDS. ¡°I¡¯ve given all my savings but more money is needed to pay for their medical treatments,¡± Wang said.
He was a doctor in a local clinic. He could have lived a happy life from this profitable job, but he didn't.
Wang began raising money for AIDS orphans by establishing ¡°Caring Family¡± for AIDS orphans in Nanyang, Henan Province in 2004. He¡¯s been asking companies and people with money to help.
Wherever he goes, he carries a big canvas bag , filled with pictures of chindren and booklets on AIDS. He wants to make people more aware of AIDS to rid them of their fear.
Meanwhile he wants to arouse their feeling by showing them pictures of innocent children. It¡¯s not so easy. Wang keeps getting turned away by people because they don¡¯t want to hear about AIDS.
¡°My heart hurts a lot when I see kids who have no access to treatment,¡± Wang said.
It¡¯s difficult for him to maintain his ¡°Caring Family¡±,an orphanage, because of the lack of financing, ¡°I don¡¯t know how long we can continue, but I won¡¯t give up since so many children need my help.
The saddest victims are the young
Editor note:Official statistics show 780,000 AIDS orphans in China in 2003. Most live a life of alienation because they're scarred by "AIDS".Here are some of their voices:
Liu wrote a poem on the wall with abrush when her father died of AIDS two years ago, telling people that he was a "good man".She knows that AIDS means shame for most people,at least for those around her.
"They call me a corpse behind my back.I once fought with a boy who said something really bad about my father."
In fact, she's not fighting a particular person, but a world of rejudice.
Shang has struggled with AIDS since birth. He was infected with HIV by his mother. Both his parents died when he was five five years old.He is now living with his grandmother. When asked what he wanted most, last Spring Festival,he said he wanted apiece of cake holding a cold piece of bread in his hand.He had no idea what a piece of cake tasted like
Life is bitter for a little boy who only dreams of having a piece of cake.
Shang is practically speechless and can only murmur, ¡°I want my grandpa,¡± when he's not close by. In her small world, there are only two people: she and her 70-year-old grandpa. She wasn't born dumb. It's just that 2002 was too great a shock for her. Her father died of AIDS and her mother remarried. She's said little since then.
She in habits a silent world, but the world can't keep silent about these children for long.
